Pamela Clare writes historical romance with great detail and historical accuracy. To get a picture in your head, envision Daniel Day Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans (a movie I have watched at least a dozen times over the years). Surrender is set during the French and Indian War, a period seldom seen in romance. I had a feeling it would be narrated by Kaleo Griffith, the narrator of the I-Team series, and it is. Oh, I have enjoyed her romantic suspense I-Team series (released in audio 2012-13) but discovering that her historical Mackinnon’s Rangers series was to be released in audio, gave me one of those perfectly ecstatic audio moments. When I started wishing for Pamela Clare in audio format back in 2009 during my first year of writing Speaking of Audiobooks, Surrender was at the very top of my Clare wish list. Drop your recs here, internet oracles of romance. When I read Surrender upon its release in 2006, I not only graded it an A+, I added hero Iain Mackinnon to the top of my favorite heroes list and I mean the very top. She’s fine, dude.Īnd then good Lord, searching “heroine afraid of hero”?! WELL YEAH, ALEXANDER ROGELIO VANDENBURG JOVANAVIC THE SEVENTH, YOU LOWKEY KIDNAPPED HER AND MADE HER A PENTHOUSE SEX SLAVE, YOU OVERPAID CAVEMAN.

Protective hero? Actually, Patrick, you’re a grumpy ass control freak with paranoid tendencies who maaayyyy have been working in personal security too long.

(((Purposefully searching for this dynamic has been a mixed bag, enjoy my mini rants:ĭamsel in distress? Well yeah, like, shooting the abusive stalker ex is a great start but tell me about the trauma recovery nitty gritty afterward.

Super tiptoey and consent-conscious about touching? SWOON. His patience/humility/horror when he triggers her and they work through it anyway? MWUAH chefs kiss to fingertips Him getting all into his protective feelings? YESSIR. The brave moment of naming her fears or injuries? GIMME DAT. The conflicted wants-what-she’s-too-scared-to-have thing? YAS. When I’ve come across this dynamic accidentally while reading, it’s always my favorite.

but she’s real skittish and banged up by life and she’s terrified of Dude. Maybe it’s him, maybe it’s men, maybe it’s romance, or sex, or maybe it’s just the weirdness of her paranoias/nightmares/quirks in the way she does life to cope with whatever she’s experienced that she doesn’t want anyone to know about. Can I get some book recommendations where the FMC is scared to death of MMC even though he didn’t give her any reason to be?
